How Domain Transfers Work
The delivery method determines whether a domain can move in minutes or requires a multi-day registrar transfer.
Two different kinds of transfer
A GoDaddy account change moves the domain between two GoDaddy customers while keeping GoDaddy as the registrar. An inter-registrar transfer moves the domain from GoDaddy to a different registrar. Those are separate processes with different requirements, timing, and restrictions.
GoDaddy account change: the fastest method
1. Prepare the receiving account
The buyer should have an active GoDaddy account and provide the recipient information required for an account change. The buyer should verify that information carefully before the seller submits the transfer.
2. Seller initiates delivery
After Escrow.com confirms that funds are secured, the seller starts the account change from the GoDaddy Domain Portfolio. GoDaddy may require the recipient to accept the incoming transfer.
3. Buyer confirms control
The buyer checks that the domain appears in the intended GoDaddy account and that the buyer has control. Delivery confirmation starts the one-day Escrow.com inspection period for Frickin Brand transactions.
Transfer to a different registrar
If the buyer wants to use another registrar, the domain must be eligible for an inter-registrar transfer. The process generally includes unlocking the domain, obtaining an authorization or EPP code, starting the transfer at the receiving registrar, and responding to approval messages. GoDaddy states that transfers away can take five to seven days, although manual approval may sometimes complete them sooner.
When a 60-day restriction can apply
A 60-day restriction generally concerns transfers to a different registrar. It may apply during the first 60 days after initial registration, after a previous inter-registrar transfer, or after certain changes to registrant information when a change-of-registrant lock is imposed. Registrar rules and the domain’s current status determine eligibility.
A 60-day inter-registrar restriction does not necessarily prevent an eligible account change between two GoDaddy accounts. GoDaddy performs its own eligibility checks and can identify any pending contact update, expiration, or transfer condition that blocks the requested method.
Why timing varies
A GoDaddy account change can be very fast when both accounts are ready and the domain is eligible. A transfer to another registrar depends on authorization, email approvals, registry processing, and any applicable lock. Incorrect recipient details, an expired domain, a pending contact change, or delayed acceptance can also slow delivery.
Transfer time and inspection time are separate
The transfer must be completed before the buyer can inspect the delivered domain. The one-day inspection period begins after the buyer receives control or Escrow.com confirms delivery. It does not run while the domain is still moving between accounts or registrars.
Buyer transfer checklist
Decide which registrar will hold the domain. For the fastest route, prepare an existing GoDaddy account. Confirm the receiving account information. Monitor both the registrar account and email for acceptance requests. Do not share an account password. Verify the domain inside the receiving account before accepting it through Escrow.com.
